Is Your New Business Idea Any Good? (HINT: Try Dating It First)

Business Idea - Paid to Speak

You have a ton of new ideas for your speaking business, but how do you know which business idea is worth pursuing and which you should dump?

Here's a thought...

Try dating your idea first!

Date Your New Business Idea First

Beware of infatuation. Like any first date, a new business idea can be exciting. But will you still like the idea a month from now? Or are you just infatuated with it? The first step to knowing if a business idea is worth pursuing is to slow down and get to know it better. What's its personality? What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses?

Date it. So you've gone out a few times with your business idea, and you can tell it's more than infatuation. Truth be told, you really like this new idea and want to take things to the next level. This means it's time to build a solid relationship with your idea to make sure it fits your speaking business. In other words, you have to start asking your new idea "relationship" questions like:

  • Does this idea fit the mission of my speaking business?
  • Will this business idea serve my current clients and customers?
  • Could this idea attract new clients or customers who fit my target market?
  • Will this business idea strengthen my current services and products or even help me create new services and products?

Put a ring on it. After asking the "relationship" questions, you'll know whether you're ready to marry this idea. If you are, stop beating around the bush and put a ring on it! The time to take it slow is when your dating. Now it's time to speed things up. Map out your plan and implement it with focused commitment.
